Everybody into the Water!

Pool parties are summertime staples. They’re pretty easy to throw and I’m sure everyone has been to at least one this summer. The only real problem with pool parties is if you’ve been to one, you’ve been to them all.

Don’t worry, there are millions of ways to upgrade a pool party and wow your friends! And nothing is as fabulous as turning your backyard and pool area into a movie theater. Sure, you may have initial reservations about having to get a projector and screen and chairs and basically everything, but trust me; it’s much easier than you think. It’s also going to be way better than any pool party you’ve been to and I’m sure most of the people who attend will agree.

So I’m going to run through the basics of how to turn your backyard into a makeshift movie screening. It’s super simple and guaranteed fun.

First things first, you’re going to need a projector. This is probably where you’re going to run into the most difficulty. A home projector can set you back hundreds of dollars, sometimes more if you’re going really high-tech. What if I said it doesn’t have to cost more than $10? It’s true; you can make your own DIY projector for your phone or tablet. It’s really easy and you just need a few household items like a shoebox and magnifying glass. Learn how to here. If you want to go full HD you’re going to need to put a little more effort in.

The next step is to make some kind of screen. Most outdoor walls aren’t white so you’ll need something that won’t be completely transparent. The easiest solution to that is white blackout fabric available at any craft store. Create a frame to hold it in place or just pin it up and it works just the same.

Now it’s time to pick the movie for a pool party. “Jaws!” It’s equal parts great and terrifying. Imagine sitting in a small body of water with your feet dangling in the water, watching a movie about people being attacked by an unrealistically large man-eating shark from under their floats. It’s probably not the most family-friendly movie to watch but most kids will for sure love it.

To combat the rush of people getting out of the pool when the first shark attack happens, make sure you have other land-friendly seating available. A small lounge area with some large pillows is a perfect additional seating option.

The most important thing to remember when throwing a backyard/pool movie screening is to have enough pool friendly movie snacks to satisfy every hungry shark in the pool. Popcorn and movie theatre candy are a must, but you can even get super creative with a concession bar with things like nachos and other finger foods to please every party guest. Don’t forget the drinks! Our tumblers are prefect by the pool. They’ll keep beverages cold throughout the entire movie and you don’t have to worry about glass breaking. (And if someone gets too scared and drops their tumbler in the pool, no worries. They’ll float.)

There you have it! Tricks to throwing the best pool party possible and it’s guaranteed to entertain all the neighbors.
